James was using even though he had a severely damaged liver with hepatitis C, and was told he’d be dead soon if he didn’t stop, and maybe even if he did. A few days after he completed his Fifth Gate he was scheduled for painful surgical procedures in the hospital. His RN (who had a son she wanted to help with his addiction problems) called and said she’d never seen a man so at peace going through his ordeal.
